Sink drains slowly: local clog or something bigger?
A slow sink is usually a five-minute fix. Occasionally it is the first warning of a main line problem. The way you tell them apart is by checking whether anything else in the house is misbehaving at the same time.

Local clog or main line? Here is the test
Run water in the slow sink and watch every other fixture nearby.
- Only that sink is slow, everything else is fine - local clog in the trap or the branch line.
- The sink is slow and the tub gurgles, or the toilet bubbles when the sink drains - that is air being pushed through a shared line. Main line.
- Two or more fixtures on different floors are slow - main line or vent problem.
- Water backs up into the tub when the washing machine drains - main line, and it needs attention now.
What actually clears a local clog
- Clean the stopper and the tailpiece. On bathroom sinks, hair wrapped around the pop-up assembly is the cause more often than anything downstream.
- Clear the P-trap. Bucket underneath, unscrew both slip nuts, empty it, rinse it, reassemble. Fifteen minutes and no special tools.
- Use a small hand auger. Past the trap into the branch line, a few feet is usually enough.
- Boiling water and dish soap on kitchen lines. Genuinely useful against light grease, useless against anything solid.
Why chemical drain cleaner is a bad trade
It sometimes opens a channel through soft blockages. What it does reliably is sit in the trap generating heat, damage older pipe and joints, and make the eventual mechanical clearing more hazardous for whoever opens the line. If a bottle has already gone in and the drain is still blocked, tell the plumber before they start.
The clue that means stop DIY-ing
If a drain clears and then clogs again within a few weeks, snaking it a third time is money wasted. That pattern means something structural: grease and scale coating the pipe wall, root intrusion, a belly holding water, or an offset joint. A camera inspection turns a guess into a picture, and hydro jetting scours the pipe back to bare wall instead of just punching a hole through.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my sink gurgle when it drains?
Gurgling is air being pulled or pushed through water in the trap. It usually means either a partial blockage further down the line or a blocked vent.
Is a slow drain an emergency?
A single slow fixture is not. Multiple fixtures backing up at once is, because the next stage is usually sewage on the floor.
How often should drains be cleaned?
Most homes never need scheduled cleaning. Properties with a history of grease, roots or repeat blockages benefit from jetting on a yearly or two-yearly cycle.
