Brown water from the faucet: narrowing down the source
Discoloured water is a diagnostic gift, because a few simple checks tell you almost exactly where the problem is before anyone opens a wall.

If this is happening right now and water is moving, stop reading and call (888) 809-6756. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Connecticut. We will tell you what to shut off while a truck is on the way.
Four checks that identify the source
- Hot only or cold too? Brown hot water alone points squarely at the water heater - usually a spent anode rod and a corroding tank lining.
- One tap or all of them? One fixture suggests a local supply line or an aerator full of rust. All of them suggests the service line or the town main.
- Does it clear after running? Water that runs clear after a minute or two is disturbed sediment. Water that stays brown indefinitely is an ongoing source.
- Are the neighbours affected? Municipal main work, a hydrant flush or a main break shows up across the street at once, and it resolves on its own.
What each result usually means
- Hot only, does not clear - water heater. Anode rod, or the tank lining is going. Age matters here.
- Cold only, clears after running - sediment stirred up in the service line or municipal main.
- Both, all fixtures, persistent - corroding galvanised supply piping inside the house, or a failing service line.
- Orange staining in fixtures over time - iron content, common on Connecticut well water. A filtration or softening question rather than a pipe failure.
Is it safe to use?
Discolouration from iron and manganese is unpleasant rather than acutely hazardous, but do not drink it, do not cook with it, and do not run laundry through it - iron sets stains into fabric permanently. If your water comes from a private well and the colour is new, get it tested rather than assuming.
The repair
Anode rod replacement is straightforward on a heater that is otherwise sound. A tank that is rusting internally is at the end of its life. Galvanised supply piping is the bigger conversation: partial or whole-house repipe, and the honest comparison is that cost against pressure loss, recurring pinhole leaks and stained laundry continuing indefinitely.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my water brown after the town worked on the main?
Hydrant flushing and main repairs stir up settled iron. Run a cold outside tap for several minutes; it normally clears within a few hours.
Can brown water damage my appliances?
Iron and sediment shorten the life of water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines, and it stains laundry. It is worth resolving rather than tolerating.
Does a water softener fix brown water?
A softener handles hardness and moderate iron. Heavy iron usually needs dedicated iron filtration ahead of the softener to work properly.
